Chedham's Yard

Chedham's Yard is a prize-winning heritage site. It has recently been restored and is now open to the public every Saturday from April/May to September.

Hidden away in Wellesbourne in Warwickshire it is a well-kept secret - a blacksmith's and wheelwright's workshop dating from the early 19th century. The Yard was run by five generations of the Chedham family, the last of whom, Bill Chedham passed away in 2012 shortly after the Yard opened to the public. The Yard is crammed with tools, equipment and items made at or maintained on site along with the materials to make them. The Yard has been restored with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and BBC Restoration after it beat churches, chapels and a gallery to win the BBC Restoration Village television programme in 2006.

Accessibility

About the Yard

The Yard lies in the centre of the village of Wellesbourne, in the heart of the conservation area and surrounded by quaint thatched cottages along a narrow twisting lane.

Access to the Yard is via a loose gravel shared driveway.  Within the Yard the surfaces are uneven both outside and inside the buildings and care is necessary.

Hand controlled and powered wheelchair access is possible to most areas although viewing the inside of the forge and wheelwrights will be restricted.

The café and toilets are wheelchair friendly, assistance will be given if requested.

Admission Charges

There is no charge for wheelchair users and those with walking aids on Saturdays although if part of an evening or midweek group a fee will apply.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the site. Water bowls are available outside the Visitor Centre.
