Brave Bold Drama is an award-winning Bristol-based theatre and community arts company. We make original family theatre shows that have thoughtful layers for all ages to enjoy. Our production of "Alf the Highwayman" won Best Children's Show at Shaftesbury Fringe 2016 and Swindon Fringe 2017. This show was selected by Travelling Light to be featured in a programme of the best family theatre in the South West in January 2019, placing our work alongside productions by Bristol Old Vic, Tobacco Factory Theatres and The Egg, Bath.
We also run a community arts centre, Creative Workspace which is in Withywood, South Bristol. Here we provide a wide range of affordable and free opportunities for all ages to get together and get creative. Our family arts programme runs during the school holidays and is incredibly popular, with events regularly selling out.
We also work in close partnership with other local organisations including the children's centres and Hartcliffe & Withywood Community Partnership to devise bespoke creative drop-in family arts events to support larger community events.
Our community and family arts work at Creative Workspace was recognised with a Bristol Life Award (Arts Category) in 2017. We were shortlisted in the Bristol Life Awards Arts category in 2018, shortlisted in the Bristol Hoop Awards 2018 for Best Family Entertainment and Best Creative Fun categories, and we are also shortlisted in the Fit for Future category of the Voscurs in January 2019.

Our family-friendly offer
We delight in seeing families having special moments together either from seeing our family theatre shows or when creating together at Creative Workspace.
We are extremely excited to be developing a new family show inspired by Alice in Wonderland in the spring of 2019 that will also be dementia-sensitive. "Wonderland" is kindly supported by Bristol Ageing Better and Quartet Community Foundation, and will be an opportunity for families who have older members living with dementia to come and enjoy a family theatre show together that could potentially span three generations. It is also an important opportunity to invite younger members of the community to re-assess how dementia is viewed. This show will encourage participation and creativity from all ages of the audience. We know that the imagination remains the longest in those living with dementia. "Wonderland" is an opportunity for families to celebrate everyone's imagination together, whether you're young, old or in between.
We work hard when touring our family theatre shows to ensure we choose venues that will not present accessibility issues for families.
Our own venue, Creative Workspace, is fully accessible for everyone.
What families say about us
“Brave Bold Drama connects with its audience and has a great outreach. Doing something positive.. a very impressive organisation.”Bristol Life Awards - Judges
Brave Bold Drama work in close partnership with several South Bristol Children's Centres and have done so for a number of years. In 2015,using Hengrove Arts funding, they ran a number of imaginative theme based workshops for parents with children over 2s with Southern Links Children's Centre. Evaluation from this project showed that parents whom attended played more creatively with their children and the children became more confident in their exploration and imaginative play as a result.
Brave Bold Drama have presented many of their original devised performances in our centres, and have given many local children their very first experience of theatre. They also devise bespoke themed drama and art based holiday play sessions in partnership us. Last summer they ran successful workshops in a Roma and Gypsy travellers site in partnership with our staff.
Gill's creativity and enthusiasm drives a dynamic and successful community enterprise. She is always keen to work with us and find ways she can bring art projects into our centres and support children's centres. To these ends Brave Bold Drama is represented at the South Hub Children's Centre Advisory Board where we share future priorities across the south.'Lil Bowers - Family and Community Locality Manager
